Reason and inspiration
Royal Mail is introducing a new generation of security features for most definitive stamps using
the latest printing technology.
From Tuesday 17 February 2009 all 1st and 2nd class standard and large letter format definitives and values at 50p, £1, £1.50, £2, £3 and £5 will be produced as self-adhesive stamps with new security features including elliptical slits and an iridescent overprint.
These initiatives are part of the on-going development of security features for stamps since Sir Rowland Hill invented the adhesive postage stamps with the Penny Black in 1840.
The overprint repeats the words 'Royal Mail' in micro text in a wave-like pattern reminiscent of security features on banknotes.
The two adjacent die cut slits are elliptical and are designed to inhibit the removal of used stamps from the mail for re-use.
As these are new issue stamps, FDOI cancellations will be made available.
